MCMC actively expanding 4G and ‘Pusat Internet’ in Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR 17 Sept. - Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is actively expanding 4G coverage in Kiulu, a small town under Tuaran district, West Coast of Sabah. 

The effort is being implemented in six  locations in the district including Pukak, Lokub, Mantob, Kitapol, Kampung Sinorut and Kampung Gonipis. 

MCMC in a statement said, the expansion will increase 4G high-speed data coverage and voice services with fiber optic connection process of all transmitter towers at the location which involves almost 39 kilometers of optical fiber expected to be completed by end of 2020. 

“Previously, Kiulu district only had Spotty radio coverage supported by 3G services,” said MCMC in its monthly update for August 2020. 

Meanwhile, there are 873 Internet centres or ‘Pusat Internet’ all over the country with membership exceeding 590,000 people, 57% of whom are students.

It said, the Internet Centre also acts as an ICT training centre for the youths and senior citizens to empower them with basic computer skills, as well as exposing them to expansive information. 

“Internet Centre is an initiative under MCMC to provide internet facilities to underserved areas as well as to inculcate computer-based skills and know-how that have become an indispensable attribute for everyone in this day and age,” MCMC added.

Apart from the ramping-up internet coverage in the state, Pos Laju Centre in Lok Kawi was launched recently and it is one of the two Pos Malaysia’s semi-automated distribution centres in Sabah. 

The centre will be a mail, courier and parcel services hub for delivery to major cities in Sabah to increase processing capacity and expedite delivery to areas around Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan, Petagas, Kepayan, Kota Kinabalu Airport, Kinarut, Lok Kawi, army camps and nearby villages. 

With the increased number of Pos Laju packages by 41% to 4.86 million from January to July 2020, Pos Laju Center in Lok Kawi is capable of handling 60,000 parcels a day compared to 4,000 parcels a day. - DagangNews.com
