KUALA LUMPUR 1 July - A non-profit organisation, International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) to award the CNN Host, Fareed Zakaria; Egyption Editor, Lina Attalah; and Russian Journalist, Roman Anin with prestigious award for their bold analysis and investigative reports.
The awards will be presented on 5 October 2020, during a virtual ICFJ’s Tribute to Journalists 2020 event, hosted by CNN lead political anchor, Wolf Blitzer. Because of ongoing health threats from Covid-19, an in-person gathering is not possible this year.
Zakaria who is notable for his thoughtful insights and expert analysis have helped Americans make sense of complex global issues for nearly three decades, will receive the ICFJ Founders Award for Excellence in Journalism.
The CNN Host of ‘Fareed Zakaria GPS’ has brought his clear-eyed perspectives to the biggest, most important stories of the day - from the Brexit debate to Russian interference in U.S. elections to the coronavirus pandemic that is rocking the world.
Meanwhile, Attalah who founded an online news organisation, Mada Msr will be awarded with ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award for producing investigative reports exposing corruption and misconduct in the midst of Egypt’s harsh crackdown on independent voices.
The website, which the government constantly seeks to block, has shed light on Egypt’s COVID-19 crisis, from its spread among medical staff to its economic toll on the most vulnerable communities.
The Chief Editor’s efforts caught the eye of Politico Editor and also a judge for this year’s ICFJ award, Carrie Budoff Brown which she said, “Lina's bravery and grit in the face of tremendous obstacles set a powerful example for journalists around the world.”
Anin will receive the ICFJ Knight Trailblazer Award for launching a collaborative, online investigative news outlet called IStories (for “important stories”) in Russia. He conceived the project as a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University.
His early investigations center on corruption involving Russia’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
