KUALA LUMPUR, 15 March – KPower Berhad in collaboration with Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Pahang (PKNP) has been shortlisted by the Energy Commission (EC) to develop a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plant of 50 megawatts (MW) in Pekan, Pahang.
The competitive bidding for the fourth cycle of the Large-Scale Solar (LSS4) scheme was opened by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) in June 2020.
The LSS4, which has a total electricity generation capacity of 1,000 MW or 1 gigawatt (GW), is the largest capacity offered under the large scale solar (LSS) program so far. In comparison, LSS3 has a capacity of 500 MW while LSS1 and LSS2 have combined capacities of 958 MW. Under LSS4, the solar power plant is expected to start operating by end of 2023.
Group Managing Director, Mustakim Mat Nun said, “The successful bid represents our first foray into LSS projects and this shortlisting represents a testament of our ability to expand into the solar segment in a significant way. This augurs well with our business strategy which is to expand into an asset ownership model for future consistent revenue stream as well to strengthen our Group’s EPCC business segment and capabilities under the solar segment.”
"We believe that the LSS projects together with our current net energy metering (NEM) program will further enhance our competitive edge in the renewable energy space. Through LSS and NEM, KPower is envisaged to be a major solar player in Malaysia and we will seek similar opportunities overseas through our current regional platform.”
“We would also like to express our gratitude to PKNP in participating with us on the project. This, together with our other projects demonstrates our ability to work closely with the local authorities and various other State Governments’ companies for mutual benefits.”
The solar segment expects to contribute positively to the Group’s bottom line in the long run. Aside from LSS4 and NEM, the Group remains confident on its prospects of meeting its RM2 billion orderbook target by the Financial Year End 30 June 2021. - DagangNews.com
