AFTER forty years and nearly 5 million cars produced to date, Proton is now venturing into new market segments that will drive the nation’s aspirations once again with the newly launched Proton X90 seven-seater SUV.
Launched in a grand manner by our Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself on May 7, the Proton X90 was launched in conjunction with Proton’s 40th-anniversary celebration which was held at the MITEC Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
The price
Available in four variants, the price of the Proton X90 is as listed below:
- Proton X90 Standard: RM123,800
- Proton X90 Executive: RM130,800
- Proton X90 Premium: RM144,800
- Proton X90 Flagship: RM152,800
While the Standard, Executive, and Premium variants are all seven-seaters, the Flagship variant comes in a six-seater configuration which includes two individual captain seats in the second row.
Now, the launch of the Proton X90 not only adds a third model to the brand’s market-leading range of SUVs, but it is also the company’s first new Energy Vehicle (NEV) offering.
To be more specific, the X90 is Proton’s first-ever hybrid model.
The hybrid system
Powering the Proton X90 is the same 1.5-litre TGDI engine as the X70 and the X50 but there is also a 48-volt mild-hybrid system which comprises a belt-starter generator (BSG) system, a DC-DC converter, a lithium-ion battery pack, a battery management system, a power-recuperating braking system, and a hybrid module control system.
While the engine itself produces 177 PS and 255 Nm of torque, the hybrid system makes an additional 13 PS and 45 Nm which brings the total output to 190 PS and 300 Nm.
In addition to making more power, the mild hybrid system also saves fuel. To be exact, the Proton X90 uses approximately 10% less fuel than the Proton X70 which has the same engine but no hybrid system.
Other advantages of the hybrid system include 15% better acceleration from a standstill, as well as a 13% drop in CO2 emissions compared to the X70.
In a nutshell, the mild hybrid system here delivers reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, improved performance, and a smoother driving experience.
More NEV products to come
Speaking at the X90 launch ceremony, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal, the Chairman of Proton said, “We will explore new segments that are aligned to the government’s aspirations and changing consumer demand as buyers start transitioning to New Energy Vehicles (NEV).”
“The Proton X90 is our first step towards executing this new strategy and there are many more products in the pipeline as Proton looks to grow our presence in this exciting new market segment.”
This was in line with Proton’s recent announcement that it aims to introduce at least one new NEV every year starting with the X90.
In case you’re wondering what is next, the next NEV that is in line to be introduced by the national car manufacturer is the smart #1 by PRO-NET, Proton’s new energy subsidiary, in the fourth quarter of 2023. - DagangNews.com
