KUALA LUMPUR Nov 22 - Some may argue that Barisan Nasional's (BN) win at the Melaka state election was a fluke.

But Malaysians cannot deny that BN's astounding win at the Melaka polls was also partly due to the government's sound economic policies.

It was also mainly due to the sterling leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who did a good job in maintaining political stability, managing the economy as well as reining in COVID-19.

Industry observers said, Ismail Sabri had demonstrated exemplary leadership to steer the country through several crises which had earned him the trust of the rakyat.

Ismail Sabri had piloted the country well amid the pandemic putting his ears close to the ground to listen and ease the plight of the rakyat.

The various cash assistance and financial aid has really alleviated the rakyat's sufferings during these difficult times.

Dewan Perniagaan Melayu Malaysia President Dr Abdul Halim Yunus said, every election is characterized by the battles at the forefront.

"Strategy wise, BN adopted 3 steps that arrested any chance of any vote swings against it.

"After three years of political upheavals nationwide, including prior to the Melaka state elections BN sold the idea of stability to the voters.

The stability narrative was attractively packaged conveying BN's 60-year track record which captured the imagination of the voters," Abdul Halim told DagangNews.com.

Cash aid eases the rakyat's suffering

One of the factors which contributed to the feel good euphoria in Melaka is the cash aid.

The rakyat was battered left, right and center by the virus and lockdowns but the rakyat remained steadfast and so did the government which remained equally resilient.

Some one million Malaysians lost their jobs and the same number of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) also closed shop, of which the government remained concerned rolling out various cash aids one after another.

As a result, the rakyat knows that the government is taking care of them and is appreciative of their efforts.

EPF withdrawals made a difference

The Employees Provident Funds special withdrawals, the i-Citra and i-Lestari really made a huge difference.

RM5,000 may not be much to the top paying managers, chief executive officers and politicians, but it could put food on the table for months for the B40.

Economy remains stable

Although the country's economy has been erratic of sorts due to the virus, nevetheless it remains in tangent.

Although, there were times it was volatile, the government managed to stay pat and resuscitate the economy.

This is no mean feat and an unenviable task  entrusted in the steady hands of Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz.

It is not easy to chart the direction of the economy amid the pandemic but Malaysia persevere under the hawkish eyes of its leaders.

The government has done well which did not escape the Melaka voters unnoticed who returned the confidence by giving BN the mandate to administer the state until the next general election. - DagangNews.com
