KOTA SAMARAHAN Nov. 4 - Shell Malaysia (Shell) will be moving its upstream activities headquarters to Miri, Sarawak. Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed this at the “Meet the People Session, Samarahan Division” event held at the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre here yesterday.

“The CEO of Shell believes in us because our country and our state are peaceful. They will set up their operation office in Miri, which will house its total staff of 2,000 across Malaysia.

“All of its staff in Kuala Lumpur will move to Miri; their operation in Sabah will also move to Miri while the rest (of their offices) will be closed down. This shows the company has confidence in us,” said Abang Johari, according to a news report by DayakDaily.com..

He said the political stability in the country and Sarawak has also induced Japanese companies to come invest in Sarawak.

“There are those who are very busybody about (Sarawak’s plan to produce) hydrogen, saying that it is inflammable. But the Japanese are coming here to invest.

“Eneos Nippon Oil, the biggest group in Japan and also another big conglomerate, Sumitomo, are coming from Japan to Sarawak to work together with us to produce hydrogen,” said Abang Johari.

He said if Sarawak was chaotic, these foreign business entities would not have come here. With these foreign groups investing in Sarawak, Abang Johari said the implication is that Sarawak’s revenue will increase.

“Presently, we have extra revenue of RM3 billion from Petronas (Petroliam Nasional Berhad). Five years down the road, Sarawak’s revenue will increase further. “But that will only happen provided we have a good government, one that can think,” said Abang Johari. — DagangNews.com
